Piston rings perform a number of duties in an engine: They seal combustion pressure and gases in the chamber, preventing them from passing by the piston and into the crankcase where they can only do harm.

The cylinder bore must be honed to the final size before ring gap can be checked. Once the ring is in the bore, use a feeler gauge to check the gap. To adjust the gap, the ring must be filed. Make sure to file from the outside of the ring to the inside as this prevents chipping of the ring face and potential coatings.

Make sure the cuts are straight by compressing the ring and holding it up to the light to look at the gap. When filing the rings, sneak up on the final gap.

Go slowly, removing minimal material at a time and re-checking the gap often. In ideal operation, the ring end gaps will be near zero to trap all of the combustion pressure in the chamber. The potential for ring butting and damage far outweighs any potential power gains.

Due to conflicting advice I hope someone can give me a definitive answer. I am inclined to think that the step of the ring should be uppermost ie nearest to the top of the piston. Yes you are correct in you assumption. Although I have never actually worked on this type of engine fitting rings this way is common practice.

The rings would normally have a "t " or say top on them. The reason for the step is that if you were fitting new rings to an slightly worn bore they would hit the wear groove at TDC. Although not always done on as much modern engines, it is also good practice to put a the rings in the bore then push down about an inch with the piston.

You would then check the gap in the ring and file with a swiss file if below spec. The usual practise is to de-glaze the bore with a glaze buster or emery paper and engine oil, clean away any rubbish, then equi-space the rings on the piston. This helps running in and reduces oil consumption. Coat piston, rings and bearings with new oil. And don't worry about the smoke on first start up. Hope that helps.

Rings also control oil and transfer heat. Correctly sizing of the gap for each ring is important because of heat. As the engine warms up, heat from the combustion chamber will force the rings to expand. A gap that is too tight may result in the rings binding butting within the groove and possibly breaking. A gap that is too wide will allow combustion pressure to fill the crankcase and reduce horsepower.

Different engine setups and different fuels result in different thermal expansion properties within the piston, rings and cylinder walls—so the recommended ring gap changes between applications.

Manufacturers take all these factors into consideration when developing gap recommendations for the engine builder. Another reason for the ring gap is simply because the ring must be split apart slightly in order to facilitate installation. There are dedicated tools, such as ring-expanding pliers that help engine builders install rings by holding the ring and expanding the gap just enough to clear the ring over the top of the piston and position the ring into its respective groove.

Some mechanics have developed hands-only installation techniques whereby one ring end is started in the groove, then the ring is spiraled around the piston and into its groove.

While the spiraling method is viable, modern, thin rings are far more susceptible to bending and require extra care to prevent that. Ring expanding pliers work very well but take care not to over-expand the rings. Most top compression rings have a dot on the surface that indicates the side that should face upward when installed. A ring that is installed upside down will lead to excessive oil consumption.

Finally, after all the rings are installed, rotate them around to ensure that they move freely within the grooves. Then orient the ring gaps according to the instructions to improve ring seal.
